1. Read the following text about crops. Make sure that you fully understand the text and know how to pronounce all of the words. You can mark the places where you have to make a pause when reading. Read the text aloud and recordyourself. You can then listen to your recording to check that your pronunciation is correct and the pauses are in the correct places.

2. Read the following questions about the text of the first exercise. Select two of the four questions and record your answers. Keep your answers brief and precise. Use your own words. You do not have to answer all four questions.
a) The text mentions a Chinese saying. Explain in a few sentences what this saying means. Use your own words.
b) The Chinese saying mentions five grains. What are the five grains and why are they so important?
c) The text says that rice production will have to increase by about 30% in the next 20 years. Explain why rice production has to increase by this amount.
d) In many cultures, a grain is a unit of measurement. Medicines are sometimes measured in grains. Can you imagine why this measurement was used and was it very accurate?

3. One of the written assignments was about your planned dinner for some friends. You have noticed that you don’t have enough time to go out shopping so you have decided to phone a friend and ask him or her to go to the shop for you and buy the ingredients. Record what you would say to your friend on the phone. Remember that he cannot buy some of the items in the quantity you need (for example the flour) so you will have to tell him what and how much he should buy.

Here’s an example for the main dish which is crispy herbed potatoes:Ingredients:

750g potatoes, 2 red onions, 6 tablespoons olive oil, 100g Gruyére cheese, 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil, salt and black pepper.

You would tell your friend “We need 750g potatoes, so you will probably have to buy a 1kg bag of potatoes. See if you can find loose red onions, we need only two; if you can’t find loose ones then buy the smallest pack you can find. I think we have some olive oil in the kitchen and, of course, salt and pepper so you don’t need buy any...”

Now record your instructions to your friend in a similar style. Use the list of ingredients as detailed in written assignment 3.

4. Describe what you see in the cartoon and try to explain its message.
