Plastics. Melting and setting
Plastics may react to heat in one of two ways. Some simply soften and melt, and return to a solid state when they cool. Others remain quite rigid. The heatsoftening type of plastic is called a thermoplastic, the heat-resistant type a thermosetting plastic. In a thermoplastic the long chain molecules are free to move
in relation to one another. But in a thermosetting plastic the long chains are cross-linked to form a rigid network.
The most common way of making plastic products is by moulding. In injection moulding thermoplastic chips are first heated until they melt, and then the liquid is forced into a water-cooled mould under pressure. This method is ideally
suited to mass-production techniques and is very widely used. In blow moulding air is blown into a blob of molten plastic inside a hollow mould, forcing the plastic against the walls of the moul
