A recent study found that only one in six workers takes a regular lunch break. They say a lunch break achieves three things: it helps the mind and body recharge; it en- ables people to step back and focus on what’s important; and it makes them feel val- ued by their employer. It’s important to take breaks with colleagues because good social relationships lead to good working relationships.
“People feel they have to get to work early, stay late and not take lunch breaks and I think it’s going to get worse because of job insecurity. People will want to show more commitment and they think that means working through their lunch hour and staying late,” says Andrew Hill, who helped conduct the study.
2. Phone message
You are Alex Bauer of Office Tech. Yesterday you were on holiday. On your desk is
the following message.
You speak to your colleague Belinda and she gives you further information: Mrs Tu- dor isn’t sure which of the two models would be better for her firm. She’d like your advice on this. They must receive the goods in six weeks at the latest. Belinda has already checked for you: both models are in stock and could be delivered, but there were only 520 left of model R92.
Mrs Tudor also mentioned that last time the driver arrived out of office hours at 5.30 on a Friday afternoon. She was very unhappy about that because the cleaning staff had to accept the delivery.
Belinda says that Mrs Tudor will be in a meeting until 10 am and she expects to find your message on her answer phone when she returns. It is now 9.50 and you have no time to lose. Kings Limited is an important customer.
You know that model R92 would be the best choice because it is faster and also easier to service. But remember that it’s in high demand and yesterday there were only 520 left in stock. Your firm allows only cash discounts.
Make a few notes for the message but don’t write down full sentences.
Remember to be polite and don’t forget to apologise for the problems with the recent shipment.
Record your message. Do not record the instructions.
3. Your opinion
A lot of managers expect to be taken out for a business lunch by suppliers before they place a large order with them. They usually go to upmarket restaurants. Do you think these business lunches are a good idea? Would you like to go out with your business partners? Give your views on this topic and record yourself.
You can make some notes before you speak but don’t write down full sentences. This is not a reading exercise.
Do not record the instructions. Check that your recording is no shorter than 60 sec- onds and no longer than 90 seconds.
